Michael Cronquist Portrait

Hey! I'm Michael Cronquist the full-time developer behind Starlab.

I love sci fi, and I love space. Stargazing, or daydreaming about it. As a kid, I'd build cardboard rocket ships in my backyard. Now I'm building a game where you build bases and pilot rockets that let you fly and fight your way across a beautiful handpainted solar system.

With a degree in computer science and a decade shipping software I decided to take the plunge. I quit my job to dedicate my time to a tiny game studio making a big game. I've been at it since 2021.

Starlab is my love letter to humanity: our science, our technology, and our art.

You can follow my journey by checking out my devlog or joining my Discord.

Artists

I work with talented artists and composers who bring the solar system to life. They are hand-painting worlds, designing creatures, and composing soundscapes to make Starlab beautiful.

I want human vision and human talent on screen, so I hire every artist and musician I can. It's where most of Starlab's budget goes, and I'm lucky to work with people who care as much about shaping these worlds as I do!

FAQ

Do you use AI?

We use AI to build development tools and reduce tedious work. Our artists control how the game looks and sounds.

Making art and music is why we make games. Starlab's artists and musicians create their work without generative AI.

During development we sometimes use AI-generated placeholders to explore ideas. These are temporary and we replace them as development progresses.
